Welcome to the Maryhill High Media Arts College Performing Arts Department.
At Maryhill we offer Drama and Music within the Performing Arts department. The Performing Arts Department seeks provide a lively, practical and enjoyable curriculum with a wide range of activities and opportunities to extend and enrich students’ experiences.
When it comes to the Drama side of the faculty, students will learn not only Drama skills but the skills that are needed for everyday life, like teamwork, co-operation and much more. The environment which Drama takes place is able to lend itself to both practical and theoretical studies.
As well as catering for students creative needs after school, there are opportunities for students to visit local and national theatres, ensuring they gain a thorough understanding of the Performing Arts industry. There is also an annual residential trip to London offered to all Key Stage 4 students.
Key Stage 3 Drama
In Key Stage 3 students will be able to access a variety of units focusing on different aspects of the subject.
Key Stage 3 Music
This is a practical course, incorporating a wide variety of performing opportunities (singing and playing pitched percussion instruments and keyboards) both individually and in groups. Listening and composing activities are integral to what we do as well. Incorporated into the Year 7 Scheme of Work are topics on graphic scores, the elements of music and an introduction to musical notation and musical structures. In Year 8 we study Medieval music, Gamelan, film music, major/minor tonalities and musical devices. The in Year 9 the curriculum continues with the study of Blues, Music for special occasions, improvisation techniques and Reggae.
Key Stage 4 Drama: Performing Arts Btec
From September 2011, Key Stage 4 students will take a combined Performing Arts Btec ensuring they have the opportunity to experience a versatile curriculum. This qualification is a great decision to make for lots of reasons. It will allow students to look into different areas of the Performing Arts, leading them into a whole range of professions and sectors and allow them to explore their creativity in many different ways.
KS4 Music
At present we offer the OCR GCSE course as an option in Year10 and 11. It is an excellent course, encompassing a huge variety of musical styles allowing for students with all types of musical interests to be stimulated, to enjoy their work and achieve well.
KS5 Music
At present we offer Edexcel AS and A2 Music. As at GCSE, these courses are aimed at a very wide range of students with many different skills. Students on this course play a leading role in the extra-curricular life of the school.
From September 2011 we will be offering a combined Performing Arts Btec Level 3 Course.

Instrumental Teaching
We currently offer instrumental tuition in the following instruments:- woodwind, upper and lower strings, brass, drum kit, guitars and singing. Lessons are provided by the Staffordshire Performing Arts and there is a small charge of £25 per term.

Music for Youth Secondary Prom
On Tuesday 8 February 2011, a group of Year 10 students and Year 8 singing leaders went to the Music for Youth Secondary Prom at Victoria Hall, Hanley. It was a fabulous concert showcasing Youth Orchestra, solo artists and premiering a new piece written by “Vivendi Sounds” a brand new ensemble made up of young Staffordshire and Stoke musicians. The concert was hosted by the television presenter Barney Harwood, who is the new presenter on BBC’s “Blue Peter”. A great time was had by all!

Choir Visit to Ravenswood Care Home
On Monday 6 December 2010, Maryhill High School Choir were invited by Miss Forster Sharples of Ravenswood Care Home to sing for their residents.
