Thank you Maryhill - from the Owen family

The family of Ruby Owen would like to express their sincere thanks for the fundraising efforts of Maryhill. They would like to "thank the school for putting so much effort in raising money for Ruby. Everyone has been fab! We have signed the consent forms for her treatment so it’s really going to happen." A huge well done to everyone who took part in the fundraising.

Year 11 Leavers Prom

On 25th June Year 11 enjoyed their annual Leavers Prom at Alsager Golf Club. The evening was a fantastic opportunity for students to attend in formal dress and enjoy a glittering evening in flowing gowns and tuxedos. A fantastic evening was had by all.

May 2010

Fundraising with silence - Maryhill students raise funds for the Staffordshire Air Ambulance.

This May, Year 9 students held a sponsored silence in aid of the Staffordshire Air Ambulance. Students, predominantly from Miss Christou's form, had great fun spending the day in silence. Organisers Dee Wain and Kim Thorley were interviewed by Mr Marchington about their experience.

What was the best thing about the day?
"Writing on white boards was fun and drawing too."

What was the hardest thing about the day?
"Not talking when people were trying to make you!"

What did you gain from this team experience?
"That when working in a team it's quite easy to raise money and make a difference."

Give one overall comment to describe the experience.
"Fun!"

Those involved were Dee Wain, Kim Thorley, Amy Harris, Erin Spruce, Becky Jones, Olivia Handley, Danni Pepper, Siobhan Lacey, Jess Akehurst, Rachel Boyson (all pictured below), Ariane Messenger, Rachel Wood, Kayley Finney, Amy Nixon, Charlotte Spencer, Victoria Robinson and Vanessa Maxfield. A fantastic effort!

March 2010

Maryhill presents "Alice in Wonderland"

On the 29th and 30th March, Maryhill was treated to an in house production of Alice in Wonderland. Students from across the year groups took part and managed to produce the two evening shows and a matinee show. Students took part in a range of activities from acting and set building to sound and lighting. This was a fantastic example of the Performing Arts talents of Maryhill and also provided a chance to fund raise for the Ruby Owen appeal during the interval. Fire Fighting Scheme

Over a period of several weeks, two students have taken part in a Fire Fighters Scheme. This day release course centred around basis fire fighting skills including basic first aid. On a completion of the course the students received certificates and a trophy to mark their achievement. Craig Radcliffe, one of the students who attended the course, gave positive feedback saying:
"On the Firefighters Scheme I have learned many new things, including respect, discipline and team-work. I have learned these things through many fun and challenging tasks including tunneling. I have been going to many places in the course including a local ambulance station but mostly Ashley firestation. We have been gathering at Newcastle firestation. While on the course I have made new friends and have had a great time. I would definitely recommend this course to others."

How to Revise evening

Maryhill ran another 'how to revise' session on the 22nd March. After the success of the session that ran last year, this session was equally successful. It provided an opportunity for both students and parents to come into school and get advice on how best to revise. Although it is the students that takes the exams, involving the whole family in revision time can be a motivating experience. This provided an open opportunity for questions and advice for the upcoming exams.

New Vic Theatre presents "All Our Daughters"

This month the whole of Year 9 had the experience of watching the New Vic Theatre production "All Our Daughters?" This production was designed to provide education about the realities of arranged/forced marriages and 'honour' violence. Based on the testimonies of real women, the aim of this workshop is to raise awareness in both students and staff of the signs of such situations and how to help those who may be vulnerable. This performance highlighted the subject, which was then followed by a set of PACE lessons building on what the students had learnt. Students also had cross-curricular links with RE, where different types of marriage were investigated.

Review Day 2010

Maryhill hosted another successful review day this month, providing an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers and take advantage of the numerous local businesses and organisations exhibiting in the main hall and the gym. It provides a great informal atmosphere with the chance to gain more information on organisations, careers, advise and local services. Maryhill also welcomed back the North Staffs Prostate Cancer Support Group who have been working closely with the school in excess of a year. BBC News Report - Maryhill goes national!

Students pulled together all their media skills this month to produce a selection of news articles that were broadcast on the BBC news website. The national competition involved year 9 students broadcasting, interviewing and even staging their own weather report. The competition was part of a national BBC day of broadcast, involving as many schools nationwide as possible. Click here to view more photos from the day. Media Diploma Clay - The exhibition

Students undertaking the Media Arts Diploma had a chance to exhibit their work as part of their course to learn more about displaying media. Students have been working on their projects for some time and were responsible for constructing their display area. Staff were then able to view the display and give feedback to the students representing their work.

January 2010

Community Cohesion Officer visits Maryhill

Rebecca Patel is the Community Cohesion Officer for Newcastle & District. She visited the Subject Leaders in December 2009 to outline her work and to raise awareness. She has taken assemblies for KS3,4,5 in the week beginning 25th January 2010, introducing herself and explaining what community cohesion is. Her message was for students to be aware of stereotyping individuals and groups of people before getting to know them. She showed a clip from A National Theatre DVD which highlighted this in a sporting context. She will be returning to school in March 2010 to lead assemblies again going a little bit deeper into some of the issues involved

More June news

Cheerleaders go from strength to strength!

From their first competition in March this year, the Maryhill Panthers cheerleading squad have come on in leaps and bounds. This month alone they have taken part in Alsager Carnival, Gymfest, a competition and auditions for Stoke's Got Talent. Both Alsager Carnival and Gymfest were successful events, allowing the squad to experience different crowds of mixed ages and the opportunity to perform in the open air. In their competition they achieved 4th place but unfortunately did not get through on their Stoke's Got Talent audition. Despite not getting past the audition stage, the team took it as an opportunity to gain more experience in different circumstances. The Panthers also took part in a sponsored Dancematathon on 30th June to raise funds to but mirrors for the school Fitness Suite. This event took place over the whole day in school and was supported by staff and students throughout. We look forward to more great things coming from the squad during the new school year, including the possible addition of several new members. Well done to all those who have taken part.
