July

Year 10 students enjoy two skills and enterprise days.

Army Day 13/7/09

The whole of year 10 took part in the day. The Army Presentation team worked with the year group to develop a range of skills that would be useful in the world of work. They were presented with a range of challenges that required them to work in teams to find a solution. The pupils developed their Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) in a fun environment.

Enterprise Day 14/7/09

Year 10 pupils worked with Giant Impact in a Business Simulation that taught them about the skills and capabilities required to be an entrepreneur. They had to be creative and work with others to find solutions and design the winning business idea. Along the way the pupils learned about the economy and the importance of taxation. The pupils had a timely reminder about interview skills. Overall the day was a resounding success.

Sports Day

House teams met to compete for the annual sports day as the sun shone on Maryhill. A range of indoor and outdoor events took place with a crowd of cheering onlookers to raise the atheletes' spirits. A good time was had by all.

Da Vinci Day

On Friday 3rd July students enjoyed a cross curriculum day with the theme of Da Vinci day. It was non-uniform with the theme of the Italian flag; green, white and red. Students took part in a range of activities from cooking Italian food and creating the Da Vinci trail to investigating the World Cup Italia in 1990 and building trebuchets. To take a look at the slide show to accompany the day, click here or to take a look at the two winning Da Vinci trails click here. A big well done to Ashley Franklin and Shaun Taylor for winning the trebuchet competition set by the Technology and Maths departments.

European Day

Staff and students took part in a European Day exploring the different culture of our European neighbours. Truffles and continental breads were made in the Technology department and popular with everyone!

All pupils took part in a workshop to learn the basic salsa steps as it is a dance that originated from Cuba but is now very popular in Spain using Spanish music and beats. The dance is a partner dance and all pupils danced together with very little moaning about the boy girl thing! (Miss Bennett)

David Beckham Football Academy Visit

A group of Maryhill students had a rare opportunity to take part in a trip to the David Beckham Football Academy. Students enjoyed a day filled with football training activities and gained an insight into football as a career. With a mixture of theory and practical activities the day was a great success.

Summer Concert

On the 1st July the Music Department held its annual Summer Concert. The programme was a varied one, with numbers performed by choir, guitar group, staff choir and soloists. We also had a performance by the Year 11 band ‘Cut Out Dreamers’ who made it through to the finals of the ‘Staffordshire Rocks’ competition 2009. The evening was well attended and £125 was raised in donations for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. This was followed on 6th July by the ‘Kidsgrove Summer Sing’ where 200 children from local Primary schools joined us in the school hall to participate in a song workshop lead by Julia Prince.
This is hopefully just one of many workshops organized as part of the Vocal Force project which started at the beginning of the year to raise the standard of singing in primary schools. Maryhill High School students have had the opportunity to train as singing leaders and 25 of them helped Julia lead the singing on the day. They did a fabulous job and a good time was had by all!

The George Finney Memorial Garden...from start to finish.

The George Finney memorial Garden has bought both learners, staff and local people together to build a learning garden of the future.
Workers from Shugbourough Hall came to give Maryhill students their expert knowledge on how to build hurdles for the garden. The results were fantastic despite the inclement weather! Take a look below at the progress of the garden from the first step.

On the 10th July, as another school year draws almost to a close, students, staff, local business and government representatives gather together to declare the George Finney Memorial Garden officially open. The sun shone brightly as the garden, beginning to bloom, was opened and everyone got a chance to see how all the hard work had paid off.
