December

Elvis has left the building.......and taken some Maryhill students with him!

A group of Maryhill students had the opportunity to star alongside Elvis impersonator Gordon Hendrix at the Victoria Hall on 23rd December. Mr Hendrix, a former Maryhill student, has made several visits to the school and was so inspired by the singing talents of the choir that he arranged for them to sing live on stage at his Victoria Hall tour date. The choir sung as part of the finale to the show alongside Elvis himself.

Awards Evening

Maryhill is always very conscious of the achievements of students and one of the ways in which this is commemorated is the annual Awards Evening. The awards took place over two evenings, KS3 on the 30th September and KS4 on 1st October, with involvement from staff and upstanding members of the community. A range of achivements are noted and certificates given, giving students and parents a change to share their achievements. A big well done to all who took part and gained certificates and to all the staff, students and others who took part and ensured that both nights were a huge success.

Brave Student saves friend from drowning.

A brave Maryhill student saved his friend from drowning in a swimming pool on a holiday in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Joe Upton had been enjoying a holiday with his friend, Mark Guy, and Mark's parents. The pair decided to have a last swim prior to their jouney home when Joe got into difficulty. Joe, who suffers from epilepsy, began to have a fit in the pool and began sinking. Mark quickly realised that this was not Joe fooling around and quickly dived in to bring him back to the surface. Mark then alerted two other people at the pool who helped to drag Joe clear. He then raised the alarm with his own family and the ambulance was called. A fantastic feat of bravery and quick thinking from Mark!

Cake sale

Students welcomed in the new term with two cake sales taking place in school on the same day. The first was held at break time by a group of Sixth Form students in the student support area with all profits going to Douglas MacMillan. The second was held in the techology block by Year 10 students, who had baked all the cakes just moments before the sale. The profits from this sale went to support Charlotte Smith, a Maryhill student who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. A treasure hunt was also held for Douglas MacMillan on the same day. The total funs is still to be announced but the figures so far are £16.00 raised from the treasure hunt and form 9KB raised £40.76. A great effort from all who took part.
