S Sproson

My name is Sheila Sproson and I am a Staff Governor at Maryhill High.  I have lived in the Kidsgrove area all my life and therefore feel attuned to the wants and needs, likes and dislikes of the local community, including its schools.  I was educated here at Maryhill where I developed a fascination for Science.  Encouraged by the staff, I knew that Science would be my future.  My first job was in a research laboratory, not a good place to start as the pace was ‘too slow’ although interesting and appealing for a new comer.  Then I moved to an analytical laboratory where the pace was fast and intense, a much better environment for my hunger and enthusiasm to learn more.  An opportunity then came my way to work in a school Science department as a Technician and I loved it.  I loved the ethos of school life as opposed to life in industry.  After a break to have my children I came to work at Maryhill as a Science Technician.  That was 23 years ago.  I became a parent Governor in 1993 when my children were here because education was moving forward very quickly with new ideas and initiatives, I felt that I needed to be and have an understanding of these issues both as an employee and a parent.  I found an insight into what went on fascinating and intriguing, I had no idea of the intricacies and complexities involved in running a school.  I have learnt a lot from being a school Governor and hope that my contribution to the decision making as been of equal value.  I have just been re elected by the staff to serve another 4 years as their representative so I shall continue to ‘do my bit’ for the staff and pupils at Maryhill.
