Ruby Owen - The Fundraising Continues!

Maryhill High have joined a host of local businesses, clubs and pubs in a bid to raise funds for local toddler Ruby Owen. The three year old suffers from a brain tumour but has the opportunity for treatment only available in America. The little girl's story touched the hearts of students and staff alike, prompting a range of fundraising events over a six month period, to help to add to the fundraising total.
Ruby's family were hoping to raise £250,000 to cover the treatment and other costs and have managed to raise a staggering £167,000 from supporters all over the world. Due to the funds becoming available so promptly American doctors have granted a discount for early payment, making the treatment a reality for little Ruby.
There are still funds to be added from the Talent Show, which has been re-scheduled, but the fundraising events are shown below!

Community Cohesion Officer visits Maryhill

Rebecca Patel is the Community Cohesion Officer for Newcastle & District. She visited the Subject Leaders in December 2009 to outline her work and to raise awareness. She has taken assemblies for KS3,4,5 in the week beginning 25th January 2010, introducing herself and explaining what community cohesion is. Her message was for students to be aware of stereotyping individuals and groups of people before getting to know them. She showed a clip from A National Theatre DVD which highlighted this in a sporting context. She will be returning to school in March 2010 to lead assemblies again going a little bit deeper into some of the issues involved.
